<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Simple. Grow it yourself!</span><br /><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg_avdaPwI/AAAAAAAABUw/MRDSnKdT2Ds/s1600/Green+Peppers.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 107px; height: 161px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg_avdaPwI/AAAAAAAABUw/MRDSnKdT2Ds/s400/Green+Peppers.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483202274972548866" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I&#8217;m serious! It doesn&#8217;t take much room and isn&#8217;t difficult at all. If you think you need a farm, 100 acres, a tractor and a few cows in order to have a garden, think again.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">See, we have this small spot in our backyard. For the past few years, it has been more of a decorative type space&#8230;well&#8230;the weeds started taking over a bit so I&#8217;m not sure it was REALLY decorative anymore, but anyway. This year, we decided it needed to be used in a more practical, economical way. We should have done this WAY before now, but for the past four summers, I have managed to hurt myself in some shape or form (remember the </span><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" href="http://cheapomcfrugalpants.blogspot.com/2009/06/fyi-gimpy-update.html">cankle</a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">?) This season, I am taking NO chances. With a goal in mind, we pulled ivy, removed pine trees and even dug out an old, stubborn tree stump that was right in the middle of it all (we didn&#8217;t have the heart to take out the rose bush or the lilies &#8211; though we will transplant those this fall.)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Next, we turned in a few bags of organic composted manure and we were ready to plant (this is only about $2 per bag.) Oh how nice is the dirt! So dark black and rich &#8211; filled with earthworms &#8211; what a good sign! (here in the Midwest, we can talk dirt all day long &#8211; about how you can &#8220;Throw your hat down and grow it!&#8221;)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">We ended up planting: 2 green peppers, 1 hot banana pepper, 2 jalapenos, 1 Early Girl tomato, 1 Better Boy tomato, 1 cherry tomato, 2 yellow pear tomatoes and 1 German Queen (which are tomatoes that grow bigger than baseballs.) Around the edges are 17 Buttercrunch lettuce plants and there in a pot stands the Basil. When the planting was finished, we did cover the area with a chunky mulch to help in reducing the weeds and for retaining moisture.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Finally, here it is. I took these pictures on May 27th.</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg8RqcKY5I/AAAAAAAABTg/Sp7VWb_azbw/s1600/garden+blog+May+27.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 262px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg8RqcKY5I/AAAAAAAABTg/Sp7VWb_azbw/s400/garden+blog+May+27.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483198820471432082" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Nineteen days later, on June 15th, I took this picture. Can you believe the difference? Talk about short term goal satisfaction, holy cow! It&#8217;s like a jungle out there.</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg86QU1WtI/AAAAAAAABTo/QDmzImwRe5c/s1600/garden+june+15.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg86QU1WtI/AAAAAAAABTo/QDmzImwRe5c/s400/garden+june+15.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483199517836008146" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">The hot banana peppers have gone from this&#8230;</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg-Q0UqPYI/AAAAAAAABUA/icH9n37BYg8/s1600/hot+peppers+may+27.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg-Q0UqPYI/AAAAAAAABUA/icH9n37BYg8/s400/hot+peppers+may+27.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483201004967705986" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">To THIS!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">And&#8230;I started counting the buds and there are over 30 of them on this plant alone! One plant&#8230;we may end up with over 50 peppers by the time it&#8217;s done.</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg-Y1csDFI/AAAAAAAABUI/stJwpPaV-1Y/s1600/peppers+june+15.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg-Y1csDFI/AAAAAAAABUI/stJwpPaV-1Y/s400/peppers+june+15.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483201142708767826" border="0" /></a><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg-ljyWjWI/AAAAAAAABUQ/ZjbiogxxqJc/s1600/Container+Gardens.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg-ljyWjWI/AAAAAAAABUQ/ZjbiogxxqJc/s400/Container+Gardens.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483201361306094946" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Even with the small area of land we have here in town, I know others have even less. Whether you live in a house, duplex or apartment, you most likely have an area to keep plant containers, right?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">After our garden was planted and we stood and stared at it for a bit (like it was going to grow right before our eyes), we decided we needed something else to mess with. So, we pulled out some decorative containers and planted some onion and mesculin leaf lettuce seeds (which is just a mix of tender greens.) Around the corner, I have a huge container FULL of chives. I *heart* them. I started that container about 6 or 7 years ago. I never have to do anything to it except harvest the herb. It just keeps coming back on it&#8217;s own every year. Plants that require no attention, how I love thee.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">You can also plant peppers or tomatoes in the containers as well. Just make sure the container is big enough to support the plant as it grows, start with good dirt and keep it watered.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Even with only a few plants in our garden, my little family of three is going to have WAY more produce than we can ever eat. We plan on making salsa and canning peppers and tomatoes to use over the winter. Also, we find so much joy in being able to give to other people: family, friends or food programs! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> How is keeping a garden a frugal effort? Yes, starting this garden cost us somewhere in the range of $100, but we will greatly profit in produce. Expense could have been lowered by buying smaller plants or starting them from seed, but we chose to purchase bigger plants that were marked down on clearance. Even with paying $3.98 for a pepper plant, each pepper is only costing around seven cents.</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: trebuchet ms;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg_O4c_lrI/AAAAAAAABUo/_dO7bw3Tp-A/s1600/lettuce+june+15.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/TBg_O4c_lrI/AAAAAAAABUo/_dO7bw3Tp-A/s400/lettuce+june+15.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483202071228290738" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Next year, our expenses should be even lower. Reasons?</span>
<ul style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">
<li>We will already have the tomato cages from this year.</li>
<li>We are starting a compost pile with our yard and produce scraps &#8211; will eliminate the need for manure. (or, if you know someone with a farm, ask them for some old, composted horse or cow doo-doo.) </li>
<li>Now that our garden area is prepared, we can plant &#8220;on time&#8221;, eliminating the need to buy more established plants. <span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">So, have you decided to grow veggies of your own now? Grab some seeds and dirt&#8230;and get planting! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">OH! And don&#8217;t forget about the little ones &#8211; did you know that when children take part in growing their own food, they are more apt to eat healthy vegetables? Get yours involved today!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-style: italic;font-family:trebuchet ms;" >**Something interesting&#8230;as we removed the ivy from the garden area, we found <a href="http://cheapomcfrugalpants.blogspot.com/2010/06/almost-wordless-wednesday_15.html">this </a>mortared into the stonework&#8230;what&#8217;s it&#8217;s story?** </span></p>

<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-size:100%;">&#8220;Hey Cheapo! What types of fruits and vegetables are in season during the month of June?&#8221;</p>
<p></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:100%;">School is out, baseball season has opened, camps are beginning &#8211; believe it or not, summer is upon us. Ahhhh &#8211; we&#8217;ve waited SO long! Time to dig out your cool salad and fruity recipes; it&#8217;s picnic time. Make good use of the food that is in season. You will not only benefit from quality, but in quantity and price too!</span></p>
<p></span></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/SiPcOlZzlFI/AAAAAAAAAlc/LtjGCpCJKFM/s1600-h/DSC_0001.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 258px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/SiPcOlZzlFI/AAAAAAAAAlc/LtjGCpCJKFM/s320/DSC_0001.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342355726108169298" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">June<br /></span>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Peak Season:</span></span><span style="font-size:100%;"> cherries (don&#8217;t blink, they&#8217;ll be gone before you know it!), limes, blackberries, boysenberries, Vidalia &amp; Wala Wala onions, apricots, okra</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">Strong in Season: </span>berries, sweet corn, peaches, tomatoes, beans<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Arriving: </span></span><span style="font-size:100%;">cucumbers, dill, nectarines, mission figs, early grapes, garlic, red onion, tomatoes<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Season Ending: </span></span><span style="font-size:100%;">fava beans, beets, carrots, ramps, sweet onions, peas<span style="font-style: italic;">, </span>salad greens (but they will be back in the fall)</span></li>
</ul>
<p>While on your shopping adventures, be sure to take this<a href="http://www.budgetsavvymag.com/downloads/pdfs/BudgetSavvy_WhatsInSeason.pdf"> printable list</a> from Budget Savvy as a reminder on What&#8217;s in Season!</p>
<p>As a bonus, here is a recipe for one of my favorite summertime pasta salads. I&#8217;m telling you, people will rave about it and will consistantly wonder what is in it! Though, there is one rule: if you attend my church, you are NEVER allowed to bring it to church functions&#8230;because that&#8217;s what I bring&#8230;hee hee The recipe makes use of the up and coming cucumbers, dill and red onion.</p>
<p><span style="font-size:130%;">Spaghetti Dill Salad</span></p>
<p>1 lb. package spaghetti, cooked, drained &amp; cooled<br />1 jar T. Marzetti&#8217;s Slaw dressing<br />2 cucumbers, seeded<br />1/2 red onion<br />2 TB dried dill or eqivilent of fresh</p>
<p>Finely chop cucumber &amp; red onion in food processor until VERY fine. In large bowl, mix dressing, dill, cucumber &amp; red onion. Toss in spaghetti until well coated. Cover and refrigerate overnight. It will look really foamy at first, but by morning, the pasta will have absorbed the liquid. Stir before serving. I don&#8217;t have a picture as of now, but will add one the next time this salad is made.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/SiPcYxJFVfI/AAAAAAAAAlk/NOGZRDWjYsw/s1600-h/DSC_0002.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 174px; height: 259px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/SiPcYxJFVfI/AAAAAAAAAlk/NOGZRDWjYsw/s320/DSC_0002.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342355901057947122" border="0" /></a><br />The T. Marzetti Slaw dressing can either be found in your groc shop&#8217;s produce section, or you can find the shelf version in the aisle with salad dressings. I happened to find this huge bottle in the clearance bin for $5.00 &#8211; plus I printed this coupon for <a href="http://www.redplum.com/">$1.00</a> off. Being doubled sized, I only used half of the jar for one salad. Definitely a better deal only paying $2.00 per recipe for the dressing.</p>
<p>If you decide to make this recipe, come back and let me know how you liked it&#8230;and how much everyone bothered you for the recipe. *wink*<br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></div>

Here in northwest Indiana, we have them everywhere! I highly recommend them as you will not get any fresher fruit than what you pick yourself. Plus, the prices are cheaper and it makes for a fun, relaxing day! Here, strawberries will come at the beginning of June; black raspberries at the end. While blackberries and blueberries can be picked in July and red raspberries in October.<br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><br />A few U-Pick tips:</span>
<ul>
<li>Call ahead to be sure when the fruit is the ripest and for prices. Also, many places require you bring your own &#8220;packaging&#8221; &#8211; whether it be a box or container to take your fruit home in. Otherwise, you might have to pay for one there. No thanks.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t go in mid-day when the sun is bearing down on you</li>
<li>Bring bug repellent and sunblock &#8211; depending on when you go</li>
<li>Bring water to drink </li>
<li>If picking thorny berries, wear long-sleeves. (blackberries)</li>
<li>My favorite berry to pick is blueberries. The rows are nice and neat &#8211; no thorns and you don&#8217;t have to bend over to pick them <img src='http://www.cheapomcfrugalpants.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </li>
</ul>
<p>Of course, you won&#8217;t be able to resist eating some of your fresh berries but you should have PLENTY to save for winter! Be sure to rinse them well and lay them out on a towel to dry. Freeze them separately on a cookie sheet. When frozen, transfer them to a bag. If you don&#8217;t freeze them apart, they will freeze into one big chunk &#8211; which is fine if you are just going to make them into preserves, but not when you want them in your cereal.<br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span><span style="font-size:100%;">While on your shopping adventures, be sure to take this<a href="http://www.budgetsavvymag.com/downloads/pdfs/BudgetSavvy_WhatsInSeason.pdf"> printable list</a> from BudgetSavvy as a reminder on What&#8217;s In Season!</span><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-style: italic;"></p>

<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic;"><span style="font-size:130%;">&#8220;Hey Cheapo! What types of fruits and vegetables are in season during the month of April?&#8221;</p>
<p></span></span><span style="font-size:100%;">If you are not buying fresh produce that is &#8220;in season&#8221; each month &#8211; you should be! Off the top of your head, do you know what is fresh and available each month? Some of us have a slight idea: berries in the summer and squash in the fall &#8211; right? Well, sort of &#8211; if you like everything made from blueberries and butternut.</p>
<p>If you are not careful, fresh fruits and veggies can quickly eat up a grocery budget. Typically, the items that are &#8220;in season&#8221; will be </span><span style="font-size:100%;">much lower in cost than other produce along with being &#8220;fresher.&#8221; When doing your menu planning, try to find recipes that revolve around these items &#8211; you&#8217;ll benefit both in quality and in the pocketbook.</p>
<p>Think about it for a second. If you are buying strawberries in December, and they really aren&#8217;t in season until July or August, are they REALLY fresh? Um..no. First of all, because they are being shipped probably from far away (depending on where you live), they have to be picked prematurely. Then, they will most likely have to be force ripened so they appear to be nice and red when they get to you. (red on the outside, white in the middle, right?) To top it off, you are probably paying way too much for poor quality fruit &#8211; if you can even consider that type of stuff fruit.</p>
<p>So, let&#8217;s take a look at what will be in season for the month of April. Take a guess and then see how much of your list matches up with Cheapo&#8217;s list. This, of course, is not all inclusive but can give you a good start. Click over to Budget Savvy for a great<a href="http://www.budgetsavvymag.com/downloads/pdfs/BudgetSavvy_WhatsInSeason.pdf"> printable lis</a>t that you can keep with </span><span style="font-size:100%;">you throughout your shopping adventures.<br /></span></div>
<p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:100%;">April<br /></span>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">Peak Season</span>: Artichokes, Asparagus, Rhubarb, Spring Peas<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">In Season</span>: Beets, Broccoli, Cabbages, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Fennel, Lettuce, Spring/Green Onions, Radishes</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">Fruits</span>: Bananas, Grapefruit, Haas Avocados, Mangoes, Pineapple</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">Season Ending</span>:</span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"> Lemons, Navel Oranges, Green Garlic, Fresh Spinach, Kale, Leeks, Shallots</span><br /></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></li>
</ul>
<p>Also, beginning in May, many areas will start hosting outdoor Farmer&#8217;s Markets. These are wonderful places to go each week to get great local produce for even greater prices! The more local you buy, the cheaper the items will be AND you are helping the environment by not needing the <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/Sc1dtUNv08I/AAAAAAAAAe0/LQRQG8md8kI/s1600-h/DSC_00012.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 151px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pUHvslTk4AM/Sc1dtUNv08I/AAAAAAAAAe0/LQRQG8md8kI/s200/DSC_00012.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318009768096289730" border="0" /></a>use of truck shipping. Don&#8217;t forget your green bags when you go!<br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Do</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> you have so</span><span style="font-size:100%;">mething to add to this list or maybe a great recipe using one of these fantastic items?
